Hrungnir let the ash drift free from his hand, frustrated at the minimal information he had gathered from the human. It seemed as though the man had only one thought running through his mind as his life drained, only one tiny morsel for Hrungnir to devour. One phrase, repeated over and over.

Don’t tell him about the survivors in the caves! Don’t tell him about the survivors in the caves! Don’t tell him….

But the man had told him, despite his best attempts to keep it secret. The only other information forthcoming from the captive had been the image of a rough map with a mountainous location on it, along with the impression of thousands upon thousands of people hidden within a warren of caves.

More food.

More slaves.

Hrungnir swiftly roared orders, and the thousands of giants snapped into motion. He had proven himself the strongest among them since defeating their former ruler in combat, and now none challenged him lest they feel his wrath. The most recent to confront him had been many turnings of the suns ago; Laftrol had attacked him when he was not prepared. The hulking giant had been the equal of Hrungnir in size and strength, but had not possessed his ability to absorb the essence of his foes.

Laftrol had not died well.

As he had told the stupid human, he not only absorbed energy from his victims, he also soaked up all their memories and knowledge – except when such memories were stunted and broken like this Norseman’s had been. Such things annoyed him incalculably. With his army moving off in the direction of the high mountains, Hrungnir vowed to torture some of those he found in the caves merely for the pleasure of it. Looking at the wooden cages containing the hundred or so human prisoners, Hrungnir contemplated torturing one or two of the pathetic creatures to release his frustration, but pushed the urge away with an effort. Those slaves were needed to raise Valhalla, his home world, out of the decay into which it had fallen.

Valhalla had once been the jewel within the realm of Jotunheim, but since the rule of Thrym, it had descended from supremacy into weakness. The slaves he would cultivate from this world would help bring them back to their former glory. The army he led was the last of the great forces of Valhalla, their other forces having been defeated in every major battle in recent history. The War Clave had once consisted of fifty armies such as the one Hrungnir now led, but had been decimated to the point where there were only two left: the one he led and the one which had remained in Valhalla to retain order.

The male and female human slaves would be forced to breed, the offspring manipulated genetically in the womb in such a way as to create more giants. This method always destroyed the female, as growth far exceeded what the human body could contain, but he didn’t care. The females in Valhalla had been long since killed off, and they desperately needed to replenish their warriors.
